At Pathways School Gurgaon we recognise in art an infinite potential for ushering change, correcting representations and questioning the normalized. Historically speaking, artistic agency has reclaimed spaces and voices usurped by the brute, the batterer and the bigot. This year, Ek Pehchan yet again provided a podium to voices from different schools to explore their identities in an otherwise entropic milieu.
The theme of 2022 was resistance. This was chosen by the Diploma Program students of PSG from a host of other equally pertinent ones. We knew that exploring layered stories of resistance via art would prove to be both formidable and accessible as art is, by nature, non-conforming, critical and fearless. Imagination is a powerful leveler. Whenever our society has been confronted with a rise in hypervigilance, bigotry, extreme polarity, and uncertainty, artists have shown their resistance by creating beautiful and poignant artworks. A mature digital culture today, has brought together technology, social media and the internet in complex and interesting ways, changing the way such resistance art is produced and consumed by making it more accessible and imbuing it with a distinctly spontaneous quality.
As art carries paradoxes and unique perspectives it explores the permanent while being steered by transient, it validates the universal through specific local narratives. Year after year Ek Pehchan allows individuals and learning communities to participate in such poignant sociopolitical practices while diving deep into different artistic mediums.
